Dominic named the group the Company of the Immaculate Conception. Dominic died at the age of 15 from health issues that had plagued him all of his young life. - Today is the feast of Saint John Ogilvie. He was born in 1579 in Scotland to a Scottish family that was part Catholic and part Protestant. He was raised as a Calvinist. At 17, he was sent to Belgium for school where he met Benedictines and Jesuits. Their teaching guided him to become Catholic. He wanted to support their missionary work in spreading the Gospel message, and was sent back to Scotland to convert the Protestants. He served the Catholics in hiding there, but was eventually betrayed and turned over to authorities. He was told that if he rejected his faith he would be set free. He refused, and was tortured for weeks and then hanged. News of his courage and his martyrdom spread throughout Scotland. In 1976, he was canonized.

Juniper was known for his simplicity. One story about Juniper tells of a time when he was caring for a sick man. The man said he was craving a meal of pig’s feet, so Juniper went to a nearby field, captured a pig and cut off its foot to prepare the meal for the sick man. When the owner of the pig complained to Juniper’s superior, Juniper apologized profusely, and then convinced the angry man to donate the rest of the pig to the Franciscan Friars for food.

During that time, she began to reflect on her relationship with God, and she felt God was calling her to serve the poor, especially children and the elderly living in the slums of Warsaw, Poland. She and her cousin took vows consecrating themselves to Mary, and began their work. Other women began to join them, and in two years they had formed the congregation known as the Felician Sisters.
