Students interested in playing interscholastic sports at the university level should talk to their counselor as early as their sophomore year.
Division I and II colleges require students register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at the end of the junior year.
To qualify for eligibility, a student must maintain a certain GPA in approved college-prep classes and achieve a certain score on the ACT or SAT. Students interested in playing for an NAIA school must register in their senior year. The NAIA academic requirements are less stringent than the NCAA.
The student athlete should be in contact with her coach and make him/her aware of her interest in playing that sport in college. Parents and the student athletes are encouraged to make an appointment to meet with the counselor to discuss her status before the end of the junior year.
